CALL FOR PAPERS – The Protection of Archaeological Heritage: Theory Meets Practice

The next conference of the International Scientific Committee on Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration (TheoPhilos) will consider the specific challenges presented by the conservation of archaeological sites. We are delighted to be jointly organising this with the ICOMOS ISC on Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM). 2026 also marks the 20th anniversary of the very first TheoPhilos meeting in Krakow in May 2006.

The aim of the conference is to facilitate a comprehensive discussion of the problems of protection, development and interpretation of archaeological monuments, including accessibility, inclusivity, technical services, climate change and illicit trafficking. The international discussion will concern the theoretical foundations and practical experience related to the protection of these monuments, and will draw on experiences from different countries, regions and cultures.

The conference will address the following themes:

  1. Theoretical foundations of the protection of archaeological monuments
  2. Methodology for the protection of archaeological monuments
  3. Problems and challenges in the protection of archaeological monuments
  4. Examples of best practice in the protection of archaeological monuments
