CALL FOR PAPERS – Amazing City: Historic Public Spaces In The Age Of Climate Change

The next conference of the International Scientific Committee on Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration (TheoPhilos) will consider the specific challenges presented by the management of historic public spaces. Our return to Poland is significant, as 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the very first TheoPhilos meeting in Krakow in May 2006.

The aim of the conference is to facilitate a comprehensive discussion between representatives of local governments, conservation authorities, academic communities and designers concerning the shaping of historic public spaces, particularly in the context of their adaptation to climate change. We will reflect on the relationship between the protection of heritage values and the need to introduce environmental and functional solutions, consider the scope of permissible interventions in historic public spaces, and develop principles for balancing conservation, social, aesthetic and climate-related requirements.

The conference theme will be divided into three thematic sections:

  1. Adaptation of public spaces in historic cities to climate challenges and conservation requirements – theoretical and practical aspects.
  2. Good practices in shaping public spaces in historic cities – squares, streets and courtyards.
  3. Conservation aspects of the modernisation and adaptation of historic public spaces – a Charter for the Protection of Historic Public Spaces.
